Spain is perhaps the most un-European of European countries. Discover Spain is a CD-ROM package designed to provide prospective visitors to Spain with an insight into the lively, enigmatic country that developed out of the mix of the Moors' and Sephardi Jews' cultures with Catholic Europe. The influence of the Moors (who controlled part of the country until 1492) has never quite left the national character, and can be seen in the lack of isolated villages (stemming from the fear of attack by the Moors) and the numerous words in the Spanish language that have Arabic roots.
The designers of this package have used good techniques to try to convey the flavour of Spain-including typical Spanish music and video of flamenco dancing. The best section, though, deals with the stupendous architecture of Spain's major historical cities, such as Toledo and Salamanca, both of whose origins go back to Roman times. Here there is a good audio guide, and fairly detailed images of the wonderful cathedrals and municipal buildings of old Spain.
The detail on architecture, music and the arts is first rate and will help in planning an itinerary. The main failing of this software is that the almost ritual nature of Spanish cuisine is never addressed which is a a shame as Spanish cuisine is an integral part of the Spanish experience. Nevertheless, with excellent audio and video footage, this package should whet the appetites of most visitors for the trip ahead. --Toby Green
